— Tennis superstar Naomi Osaka has inspired a manga series by the duo behind “Pretty Cure.” “Unrivaled NAOMI Tenkaichi” by Futago Kamikita will debut in the February issue of Nakayoshi magazine, which goes on sale in Japan on December 28. The announcement included a drawing of Osaka sporting pink hair.
— Pam Smy has been awarded the inaugural Invisible Prize for illustration from Picture Hooks. The biannual award was created to honor “the quiet reach and huge influence that the illustrator offers,” particularly in children’s books. Smy is an illustrator and educator whose first graphic novel, “Thornhill,” was shortlisted for the CILIP Kate Greenaway Prize in 2018.
— Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train surpassed Titanic to become the #2 all-time hit at the Japanese box office. Based on the comic by Gotoge Koyoharu, the film has earned $264 million since its opening on October 16. The #1 spot is still held by Spirited Away, which made $295.5 million in 2001.
— The first trailer for the upcoming Doctor Who festive special has been released. Airing New Year’s Day on BBC One, “Revolution of the Daleks” will feature the return of John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, and Chris Noth as Jack Robertson, as well as newcomers Dame Harriet Walter (Killing Eve) and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits).
— Finally, speaking of trailers, the season 2 trailer for Netflix’s Hilda is available to watch on YouTube. The animated show is based on the “Hilda” graphic novels by Luke Pearson. Season 2 arrives on December 14.
