In case you missed it, King Features announced a new Popeye comic, and we released previews of this week’s “B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know” #11 and “United States vs. Murder, Inc” #4. We also interviewed Liam Sharp about “Green Lantern” and launched our gift guide for the year.

– IDW’s upcoming Rocketeer revival, “Rocketeer Reborn,” has been cancelled. This comes after a third issue expected to be released in February was absent from solicitations, and issue #1 (due out later this month), and issue #2 (set for next month), were delayed until March and April respectively. IDW added that the series will not be re-solicited. “Rocketeer Reborn,” written by Elsa Charretier and Pierrick Colinet with art by Javier Pulido, was about Cliff Secord’s jet pack being rediscovered in the present day, and was set to introduce the first female Rocketeer.

– The Laydeez do Comics Award will be running for a second year. The award sets out to spotlight graphic novels that are in production by women in the UK. The award specifically looks for graphic novels that deal with “the drama of the everyday and the autobiographical,” and “that stretch definitions of the comics form as well as the subject matter.” There will be a panel of four invited judges with different interests and knowledge of the graphic novel form deciding the winner. In addition to the Laydeez do Comics award, there will also be the Rosalind B. Penfold Prize, for an individual who is shortlisted and has found their “voice over the age of fifty.” Laydeez do Comics is a female-led, but not female-only, forum that was launched by artists Nicola Streeten and Sarah Lightman in 2009. The winner of the Laydeez do Comics Award will be announced on March 31.

– The BBC told the story of two brothers on the autistic spectrum who started their own comic shop, Niche Comics. Originally, the shop started out as nothing more than a “laughable” idea, but the idea stuck with mother, Angela Makey, who bought a property for her sons, Adam and Guy, to establish themselves in. Adam Makey described how his love for comics started when his parents told him about his Asperger syndrome diagnosis because comics were a “reminder that it’s OK to not be like everyone else.” Over the years, the brothers have not only successfully established the shop, but older brother Adam now also gives talks in schools about how graphic novels can be successful in connecting to people on the spectrum.

– Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Week will take place between January 8 and January 16. The week-long celebration of the Fantastic Four will kick-off with a special live-stream on the Marvel website detailing what is soon to come for Marvel’s First Family. Throughout the week, Marvel will be sharing exclusive content relating to the Fantastic Four as well as revealing the variant covers for issue #6 of “Fantastic Four” which marks the start of ‘The Herald of Doom.’

– This year’s Annie Awards nominations were announced and there’s a host of comic book adaptations included. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is set for release on December 14, has been nominated in seven categories, including Best Animated Feature. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hilda were each nominated in three categories, while Big Hero 6: The Series was nominated in two. PlayStation 4’s Spider-Man game, MFKZ, Avengers: Infinity War, We Bare Bears and Teen Titans Go! to the Movies were all nominated in one category each. The Annie Awards ceremony will be held on February 2. Check out the link for the full list of nominees.

Deadline reported that Marvel Studios are fast-tracking a film starring superhero Shang-Chi. Chinese-American screenwriter Dave Callaham is set to provide the screenplay for the project, with Marvel currently searching for Asian and Asian-American directors to take the helm. It will be their first film with an Asian protagonist. Created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin, Shang-Chi is a martial artist raised in China without access to the outside world. When his training is complete, Shang-Chi’s father introduces him to the outside world to do his bidding, however, Shang-Chi soon suspects that his father may not be the humanitarian he claims to be.

– Dylan O’Brien has been announced as the voice of Bumblebee in the upcoming movie of the same name. In an interview with IGN, Transformers franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura described how O’Brien is the right actor for the role because he has a “great quality in his voice of youthful exuberance, and also sort of trustworthiness.” Bumblebee is set for release on December 21.
