– Matt Kindt and David Rubín’s Dark Horse series “Ether” has had its library edition cover released. The three-volume series will be fully collected in hardcover at a US$59.99 pricepoint, coming out May 18, 2021. The series follows a dimension-hopping explorer in the magical ‘Ether,’ as the real world passes him by, rendering him a man out of time in his home and a man out of place in the great unknown. “Ether” was originally serialized as “Ether” #1-5, “Ether: Copper Golems” #1-5, and “Ether: The Disappearance of Violet Bell” #1-5.

The Guardian have reported that 2020 has been the biggest year for comics on Kickstarter in the platform’s history. In the 12 months since October of last year, US$22 million in comic projects have been backed on the site, a $5 million increase since 2019. This massive rise in support can likely be attributed to the shutdown of the direct market due to COVID-19, and the impact of high profile projects like Keanu Reeves’s “BRZRKR,” and Duncan Jones’s “MADI,” which raised $1.45 million and $360,000, respectively. Since its beginning in 2009, comics on Kickstarter have received $127 million in backing.

Publishers Weekly revealed book deals for “Chef’s Kiss” by Jarrett Melendez and Danica Brine (set for release in 2022), and Oli Franey’s graphic novel “Monster Crush” (2023). “Chef’s Kiss,” which was acquired by former Oni Press editor Robin Herrera, follows a college graduate, whose reluctant new job at a restaurant leads to an unforeseen romance with his coworker Liam. “Monster Crush,” which will be distributed by Dark Horse Comics, will follow 16-year-old Ruby, after she discovers her best friend Ella can turn into a monster.

– French president Emmanuel Macron fielded questions around the most recent bout of Islamophobic cartooning in media on Monday. After Charlie Hebdo‘s publication of comics satirising the prophet Muhammad, various parties in the French political sphere have debated the supposed legality, necessity and danger of these comics, with French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin even proposing legislation against criticism of them. President Macron however, emphasized the rights of the freedom of the press in such scenarios, saying “We must realize that this law is the law chosen by the French people… These cartoons and articles that shocked you are not issued by the French authorities or the French president.” Macron has previously labelled Islam as a “religion in crisis.”

– Titan Books are collaborating with Marvel for a new prose anthology, Black Panther: Tales of Wakanda. The book features 18 authors of African descent, each telling their own story set in the Afrofuturist nation state. The book will feature the work of Nikki Giovanni, Sheree Renée Thomas, Tananarive Due, Caldwell Turnbull, Suyi Davies Okungbowa, Christopher Chambers, and more, and will be edited by Black Panther: Who Is Black Panther author Jesse J. Holland. “These authors involved in Black Panther: Tales of Wakanda took that flame and put their own unique cultural marks on the work,” said Holland. “This book represents the pure creativity they brought to the worlds of Wakanda and the Black Panther and takes the reader on a tour of the past, present and future of one of comic’s most enduring and exciting characters.” The 480-page book releases February 2, 2021, for US$25.95.

– After its recent deal with SiriusXM, Marvel have announced their latest podcast, Marvel Declassified. The narrative interview podcast will be led by co-hosts Lorraine Cink and Evan Narcisse, who are both active comic literary critics. The weekly podcast will feature behind-the-scenes interviews with famous members of Marvel’s bullpen exclusively on SiriusXM.

– The hit anime adaptation of Koyoharu Gotōge’s “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” had its English dub released on Funimation yesterday. Funimation already streamed the original 26 subtitled episodes. Demon Slayer follows Tanjiro in a world of untamed wilderness and infernal threats as he struggles to get revenge and reconstruct his broken family. Funimation will also be releasing Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train in theaters with subtitles in early 2021.

– Finally, Alfred Molina will be joining the cast of the Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel, reprising his role as Doctor Octopus from Sam Raimi’s 2004 film Spider-Man 2. He joins Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the sequel, tying together the three distinct Spider-Man film series in one picture. It is unknown how large of a role Molina will play in the film.
