In case you missed it, BOOM! Studios have announced “I Heart Skull-Crusher” by Josie Campbell and Alessio Zonno.

First Graphic Novel Award 2023

– Via Bleeding Cool, Alex Taylor, also known as azbt, has won the inaugural First Graphic Novel Award. In partnership with SelfMadeHero, the Cartoon Museum, and award director Corinne Pearlman, the award was open to UK-based artists, writers and comics creators who have never had a graphic novel commercially published. Taylor was among seven shortlisted nominees. SelfMadeHero will now offer Taylor a contract, which will secure publication for his graphic novel “Bone Broth.” The book follows Ash, a young transmasculine queer person, starting his first job in a ramen shop. As he’s learning the ropes, he’s suddenly caught up in covering up the death of his boss. Taylor will also receive an additional £500 cash prize.

– Via a Screen Rant exclusive, AHOY Comics have announced “The Wrong Earth: Dead Ringers,” a five-issue series written by Tom Peyer with art by Jamal Igle, inks from Juan Castro and colors by Lee Loughridge. The book continues the adventures of Dragonflyman and his sidekick, Stinger, as they finally arrive back on Earth-Alpha, only their Earth-Omega counterparts, Dragonfly and Stinger II, have returned with them. The new series will also feature hip hop homage variant covers from Jamal Igle. “Wrong Earth: Dead Ringers” #1 hits shelves on March 13, 2024.

– Via Popverse, Humanoids have announced “What We Wished For,” a new graphic novel from cartoonist Ilias Kyriazis. The book follows a group of friends who see a comet and wish for their dreams to come true. They are disappointed when nothing happens, but when the comet comes back 35 years later, their wishes are granted, with unexpected and sometimes deadly results. “What We Wished For” will be available in July 2024.

– At a screening for What If…? season two, Marvel Studios revealed an animated series called Eyes of Wakanda, which will follow Wakandan warriors who have been tasked with retrieving vibranium artifacts throughout history. It was also stated Spider-Man: Freshman Year has been retitled Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. It was not said when Eyes of Wakanda would premiere, although footage was shown in a sizzle reel with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and X-Men ’97, which are both releasing on Disney+ next year. What If…? season two begins nightly on Friday, December 22.

– The nominees for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards have been announced. Some notable nominees include The Boy and the Heron, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which were both nominated for Best Original Score in a Motion Picture, and Best Animated Motion Picture. A new category, Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, was also announced, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Across the Spider-Verse both among the nominations. You can view all the nominees here. The Golden Globes is set to air Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.

The Beat reveals Vault Comics have partnered with Chicagoland-based Buckledown Brewing to create an official “Barbaric” beer. Known as the Barbaric Blood Red Ale, the beer will be available to the public starting Friday, December 15. Series co-creator Michael Moreci will host a launch event for the beer at the brewery’s tasting room in Lyons, Illinois, at 4:30 pm. “Barbaric” is written by Moreci with art by Nathan Gooden. A new miniseries, “Barbaric: Born in Blood,” will launch in February.

– Finally, via ICv2, Magma Comix have launched “Maui Strong,” a new anthology to raise money for Maui residents affected by the devastating wildfires on the island in August 2023. The book features adaptations of mo‘olelo, traditional Hawaiian stories by Hawaiian artists and writers, including Tom Bacon, Mark Gould, Blaze Hoʻomakoa, Brooke Hutchins, Jillian Ikehara, Nāinoa Kahiona, D.J. Keawekane, Aaron Nakahara, Kel Nuttall, Carl Shinyama, Joshua Sky, Chase Tokutaro, and Kanila Tripp. The purchases and funds raised on Zoop will be donated to Maui Rapid Response.
