Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown of comic news stories we missed from the previous day. Have a link to share? Email our team at rundown@multiversitycomics.com.
– While this is not exactly comics news, it could have a huge impact on the sorts of comic movies that come to the screen from Warner Bros in the future: head of WB’s film department, Greg Silverman, is stepping down, to be replaced by New Line Cinema head honcho Toby Emmerich. Silverman, who has been at the helm since 2013, has overseen films that have been financially successful but critically lambasted, such as Suicide Squad and Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Whether or not Emmerich’s leadership will change the types of films that WB is putting out remains to be seen, but make no mistake: this is partially a reaction to both the critical beating of the superhero films and the lack of commercial success for films like Pan and Vacation.
– Speaking of DC/WB films, there are rumors of both a solo Deadshot film, and of Megan Fox playing Poison Ivy in Gotham City Sirens. Neither are anything more than idle chatter right now, but it’s a slow news day so back off.
– What’s not a rumor is that Ben Affleck’s Batman film, allegedly called The Batman, will open sometime in 2018.
– The Red Legend, a new character to be introduced in “Divinity III: Stalinverse,” is described by Valiant as their own Thor or Wonder Woman, a character seeped in mythology and power. And, according to the press materials, the character will be a presence in the Valiant Universe after the event ends.
– Speaking of Valiant, it appears that “Britannia” will be returning, in some form or fashion, in 2017.
– I’m not gonna lie, guys: at first, I really thought that our own Jess Camacho got cast as Gypsy on The Flash. But I was wrong – it is some other, obviously less cool Jessica Camacho.
– Box Brown, fresh off of his Tetris and Andre the Giant original graphic novels, is next tackling the life of Andy Kaufman. I wonder how Tony Clifton feels about his old (and dead) rival getting a book before he did.
– Remember that Star Wars anthology we told you about on Monday? You can download it, free of charge, right here.
– Could Legends of Tomorrow be introducing Dinosaur Island?
– In what i09 calls “perfect casting,” Molly Ringwald has joined Riverdale as Archie’s mom. We have to agree.
– Greg Weisman, co-creator of Young Justice, wants a new DC comic of the same name, and isn’t shy about it.
– Method Man wrote a “Ghost Rider” story for Marvel’s digital “Infinite Comics” line. That’s a sentence that wouldn’t have made sense in any context in 1995.
– Sonequa Martin-Green, better known as Sasha on The Walking Dead, has joined Star Trek: Discovery in the lead role, which is not a the role of a captain. Little else is known about the role, but Martin-Green is an excellent actress, and I’m very excited to see what she can do on the show.
– Both the Pacific Rim and Godzilla sequels have new titles. Personally, I think Godzilla, King of the Monsters is a classic, and pretty baller title.
– And, finally, if you have the El Rey network, they are providing an amazing way to avoid your family this Christmas.
