Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown on comic news stories we missed from the previous day. Have a link to share? Email our team at rundown@multiversitycomics.com.
– Parker! Get me photos of Batman! The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Justice League Part 1 has added JK Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon. This is… y’know, for all the guff I have and will continue to give Warner Bros over their DC films, this is actually a good move. I’m such a mark for Simmons that I pretty much definitely have to watch Justice League for him alone. Dammit.
– On the other side of the fence, Deadline has reported that Zendaya will play a role in Sony and Marvel Studio’s solo Spider-Man film scheduled for 2017. If you’re like me, you’ll be sad to see she isn’t playing MJ or Gwen Stacy, but instead she’s playing… Michelle. Yeah. Cool.
– In really cool news, WGN America has picked up the pilot for the adaptation of Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera’s “Scalped”. This is awesome news because “Scalped” is amazing and the network is reportedly looking for an all Native American cast which could be a big move.
– Did you know we’re living in a world where Jeff Nichols, director of Take Shelter and Mud, was considering directing the Aquaman film? Well, we are and he talked about why he passed on the film and why he decided to crush all of my hopes and dreams.
– In terribly sad news, cartoonist Paul Ryan passed away recently. Chances are you probably knew Ryan for his Marvel work on “The Avengers” or “Fantastic Four” where he defined the book’s look for many readers, his DC work on “The Flash” where he was one of the definitive Wally West artists or “The Phantom” where Ryan had been working on daily comic strips since 2007. He’ll be missed by many.
