Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown on comic news stories we missed from the weekend. Have a link to share? Email our team at rundown@multiversitycomics.com.

– The latest installment in the X-Men franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse topped the box office this weekend, pulling in about $65 million. After the holiday weekend, the Bryan Singer directed flick is expected to make about $80. The sequel to Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Alice Through the Looking Glass came in at number two, with a below expected $28 million. Not to worry about Disney though, since they also topped over $4 billion at the box office this year; oh, and Captain America: Civil War has surpassed Deadpool to be the highest grossing film of 2016 (so far).

– On Saturday, Jeff Bridges announced via Twitter that he is joining the cast of the upcoming Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Directed by Matthew Vaughn (who hasn’t really made a good movie since Stardust), the sequel will drop in 2017.

– One last superhero movie note: in an interview with The Daily Mail, Jeremy Irons called Tyrant Lizard Batman v. First Order Superman: Fists of Fury “muddled” and “overstuffed”. “The next one will be simpler,” he says. “The script is certainly smaller, it’s more linear.” He also reveals the true reason why he made this movie: “I’m tied into The Batman at the minute, which is nice because it’s a bit of income…”. Then again, who could blame him?

– Even Stan Lee has thoughts on the Captain America twist. “It’s going to make you want to read the books . . . they’ll probably do a movie based on it, so I can’t fault it.” Lee, ever the pragmatist. Of course, I’m more surprised he didn’t claim the idea as his own from years previous.

– Take a moment to read this. Caitlin Rosberg makes a great case for the legitimacy of webcomics and the necessity for the Eisners to start recognizing them a little better.

– On Friday, we asked which of the Big 2 “Controversies” offended you less.

Well, the results are in and at the time of this writing it seems the majority of our readers could deal with the Watchmen being part of the DCU proper. (Frankly, I’m surprised it took DC this long to pull this stunt.) Ross Radke commented: “If you’re going to bring Dr. Manhattan to the DC universe, having him be the guy who’s screwed up their continuity for the last few decades seems the way to do it.” Lots of people also shrugged it all off and went out for pizza, though it seems no one is too happy about that Hydra shenanigans. Or more accurately, the Marvel editorial shenanigans. Dominik Zine writes: “Brevoort and Spencer’s protestations aside, this “Steve Rogers always was a Hydra agent” twist is just silly and will only exist for at best a couple story arcs. It’s distasteful to the character’s legacy and his creators – but in the end it will just be a brief period of nonsense, like Wolf Cap or Red and Blue Supermen.”

Anyway, make sure you check back Friday for the next Weekly Readers’ Poll!
