– Just a few days after getting a cash infusion that was set to help fund the current comic book line, Archie released information about a new title – “Josie and the Pussycats” by Marguerite Bennet, Cameron DeOrdio, and Audrey Mok. The musical characters – classic Archie characters who inspired a television show, a feature film, and actual records – will seemingly be updated in the way that the folks over in “Archie” and “Jughead” have been, and will be more contemporary in their approach. It’s a great idea, and the team seems like a good fit for the new Archie tone.
– Suicide Squad, the film so dark it has the word for killing yourself in the title, apparently isn’t that dark after all! If it was as dark as rumored, it could never have received a PG-13 rating. The rating is somewhat significant, as it means that whatever screening I get to will be incredibly full of parents who let their kids see anything that isn’t R. It also means the movie will make a ton more money.
– Justice League Action, the new Cartoon Network show focused on DC’s superheroes, has a few new confirmed characters, along with the already announced Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman: Shazam, Harley Quinn, Mr. Terrific, Hawkman, Lobo, Joker, Doctor Fate, Blue Beetle, Swamp Thing, Firestorm, Big Barda, and Doctor Light are among the characters made out from an image shown at a Malaysian conference. No concrete details about the show’s release date or full cast have been officially revealed yet.
– Speaking of DC TV shows, it appears that Supergirl will be getting some new cast members, specifically some that are recognizable from the comics: Snapper Carr, Lena Luthor, and ‘Maggie,’ who Bleeding Cool (and I) think might be Maggie Sawyer.
– July 13th will bring another Marvel midnight release, this time for “Civil War II” #3 and the ‘Marvel NOW!’ Previews catalog.
– New York Comic Con – the unofficial ‘home’ convention of Multiversity – will now feature ‘Book Con’ as part of the weekend’s festivities. You don’t have to think too hard to figure out what Book Con is.
– Did you want to watch DC’s upcoming adaptation of “The Killing Joke,” but wanted to be made uncomfortable by the way some people fetishize the book? Well, good news! You can see it in a room full of potential sickos for one night only!
– Speaking of downcast DC properties, the Injustice 2 trailer is live, if you’re into that sort of thing.
– Marvel has confirmed production on animated series built around Ant-Man and Rocket Raccoon and Groot. They both make a lot of sense for a kid-friendly property – let’s hope they’re better than some of Marvel’s current animated product.
– In August, DC is releasing their first ‘DC Super Hero Girls’ feature length film, and CBR has an exclusive trailer for it.
– These are pretty great.
– Mandrake the Magician, a character known from the King Syndicates line of characters, alongside folks like the Phantom and Flash Gordon, is getting his own Sascha Baron Cohen-starring feature film. That’s great casting, but a weird movie to make.
– And, finally, you don’t want to mess with Jim Gordon.
