Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown on comic news stories we missed from the previous day. Have a link to share? Email our team at rundown@multiversitycomics.com.
– One of the truly surprising and exciting names announced for DC’s ‘Rebirth’ initiative was Christopher Priest. The writer, out of comics for a full decade, was announced as the writer on “Deathstroke,” a character that felt like an interesting fit for Priest. In an interview with Newsarama, he talks a lot about what brought him back to comics, the primary reason being that he was offered a character that wasn’t African-American.
Priest essentially says that he felt he was getting typecast as a ‘black’ writer, and wanted to break free of that designation. In a landscape where we frequently hear cries of wanting characters worked on by creators that share their racial/gender make up, this is a very different type of statement than what we are used to. That’s not a judgment call, just a statement of fact – Priest is a great writer, who has earned the right to work on whatever character he wants to, and I can understand wanting to not be known as one type of writer.
He also calls the book a “Sopranos-style family drama.” I’m so in.
– Speaking of ‘Rebirth,’ the two books that were announced but never scheduled were “Super Sons” and “Justice League of America.” Well, both books are now scheduled for 2017, a delay caused, in part, by the overwhelming success of ‘Rebirth,’ and the co-publishers deciding that they could spread out the books a little bit more.
– The film adaptation of Wilson, the Daniel Clowes graphic novel, is due to be released on March 3, 2017. Woody Harrelson will be playing the titular character.
– Josh Mond is the new director of the “Who is Jake Ellis?” adaptation, simply titled Jake Ellis. Mond recently directed James White, sadly not a biopic of the No Wave-era saxophonist and lead singer of The Contortions and the Blacks.
– Aaron Kuder, fresh off of a few years of drawing Superman, is now a Marvel exclusive artist. Congrats, Aaron!
– Supergirl has cast its Lena Luthor, and got a surprise visitor on set.
– Marvel and ABC are reportedly discussing a ‘number’ of new series, despite the cancellation of Agent Carter and the non-pick up of the Mockingbird-starring Marvel’s Most Wanted.
– I am legitimately shocked that our own Alice W. Castle hasn’t pitched us this exact article.
– Legends of Tomorrow has reportedly cast its Citizen Steel, as well as debuted this bomb-ass logo for the Justice Society of America. I want a poster, like now.
– And, finally, while a lot of the Joker’s scenes got cut out of Suicide Squad, the film remains the worst place you could ever want to work, ever.
