– Small Press Expo occurred this past weekend, and one of the biggest events to come out of the show are the Ignatz Awards! Celebrating achievements in small and independent comic, the Ignatz was handed out Saturday night. And the winners are:
– Tillie Walden for Outstanding Artist (“The End of Summer”)
– Kate Beaton for Outstanding Anthology (“Step Aside Pops”)
– Lisa Hanawalt for Outstanding Graphic Novel (“Hot Dog Taste Test”)
– Noah Van Sciver for Outstanding Story (“My Hot Date”)
– Tillie Walden for Promising New Talent (“I Love This Part”)
– Keiler Roberts for Outstanding Series (“Powdered Milk”)
– Sam Bosma for Outstanding Comic (“Fantasy Sports No. 1”)
– Carolyn Nowak for Outstanding Minicomic (“Radishes”)
– Meredith Gran for Outstanding Online Comic (“Octopus Pie”)

Congratulations to all winners and nominees. We all hope you enjoy your bricks!

– So far, the interim issues of “Star Wars” have centered on Obi-Wan and his time guarding young Luke on Tatooine. With “Star Wars” #26, Aaron shifts focus to a story about Yoda. It’ll be illustrated by Salvador Larroca, who has some time to kill now that “Darth Vader’s” ending.

– Publisher IDW is switching from using Diamond Books to Penguin Random House for their book distribution. This will happen in April 2017. “Enterting this new relationship with Penguin Random House is an exciting opportunity for us. Our mission as a publisher has always been to create quality content and get it out to as many readers as possible. With Penguin Random House working alongside us to achieve that goal, we think IDW is primed to increase sales and take our market share to the next level,” says CEO and Publisher of IDW, Ted Adams. IDW will still handle their individual magazine and comic distributions through Diamond, since the company is a monopoly who controls whatever goes out to stores, but it’s interesting to see more publishers starting to move away at any opportunity. (Archie, Dark Horse, and DC, not to mention the big OGN publishers like First Second, Fantagraphics, and Koyama.)

– What’s also worth noting: comic circulation has reached its highest number in over 20 years. We’re talking ‘90s levels over here, right the numbers from right before the comics bubble burst. While it’s fantastic more and more people are getting comics, we should also probably learn from the past and try not to let the industry implode.

– The Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics has announced their judges for the 2017 ceremony.

– Check out this interview with Matt Bors, founder of The Nib. He talks about long-form graphic journalism and sociopolitical comics.

– Clay Martin Croker, an animator and voice actor known for his work on Space Ghost: Coast to Coast and Aqua Teen Hunger Force has passed away. He was 54.
