The Rundown: Emerald City Comic Con Edition

Welcome back to The Rundown, this is a special edition where we will highlight all the news from Emerald City Comic Con over the weekend as well as the Coast-to-Coast Live Streamed Comic Con. DC 
– DC released the solicits for their June DC/Looney Tunes Specials including a Batman/Elmer Fudd crossover from Tom King and Lee Weeks and Maritian Manhunter/Marvin the Martian special from Steve Orlando.
– Scott Snyder revealed that Duke Thomas is set to have an expanded role across the DCU following this summer’s Batman-centric event which Greg Capullo seemingly confirmed is called “Metal.” You can check out a recap of that panel here.
– It was also confirmed on a DC panel that there is a Justice Society of America comic coming later this year.
Jock will be drawing the upcoming “All-Star Batman” #9 issue instead of the solicited Afua Richardson due to her suffering a recent injury. Jock was the artist on #6 as well.
– DC also had an “Uncharted” panel at ECCC which focused on Vertigo, Mad, Young Animal, Hanna Barbera, and the new Wildstorm imprint. Check it out here.
– The originally solicited Swamp Thing/Batman story for “Batman” #15 from Tom King/Mitch Gerards has been moved to “Batman” #23 due out May 17, replacing the David Finch drawn “I Am Bane” epilogue.

Marvel

– Marvel’s “Next Big Thing” panel started off reiterating the news that at the start of “Secret Empire” before moving into details of upcoming issues from Charles Soule, David Walker, Zub, and Dennis Hopeless. Check out a summary here.
– Marvel released all of Andrea Sorrentino’s “Hydra Heroes” variant covers for the upcoming “Secret Empire” event.
– They also released the “Villains of Hydra” variants for “Secret Empire” as well which include none other than Magneto and have caused quite the stir online.
– Ahead of ECCC Marvel also revealed five new cast members for the upcoming Inhumans series which will premiere in IMAX before running the remaining episodes on ABC. These include castings for Gorgon, Crystal, Triton, Auran, and an undisclosed role while also revealing Lockjaw will appear in CGI.
– A summary of the Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends panel can be found here. Dan Slott, Chris Gage, Robbie Thompson, Dennis Hopeless, Hannah Blumenreich, and Joe Kelly were all on scene.
– In his C2Con2017 interview Dan Slott revealed that his upcoming 10 page story in “Amazing Spider-Man” #25 with Giuseppe Camuncoli will drastically change the Spider-Man realm of the MCU. In that same video Marvel editor Jake Thomas said it’s not just Nick Spencer’s Captain America work whiich is setting up “Secret Empire” but a multitude of titles. This gives credence to the teases that Peter Parker will no longer be a CEO in the upcoming Marvel relaunch following “Secret Empire”
Ant Man star Evangeline Lily said DC’s film slate “takes itself too seriously” at ECCC.

– Image announced a whopping 15 new titles at ECCC which we covered in detail here. This includes Jordie Bellaire’s first high profile writing assignment (which she is also coloring) and Klaus Janson’s first creator-owned book. Check out our poll here and tell us what you’re most excited for!
– The Image founders hosted a panel for their 25th anniversary at ECCC with all but Jim Lee there who they roasted outright (Lee had been invited.)
Kelly Sue DeConnick revealed a little bit about her upcoming titles, including that she is working on a five-issue anthology for “Bitch Planet” to offset its delays with every issue containing three short stories, as well as a Compliancy Manual for the series and the third act of “Pretty Deadly.”

IDW
– Shelly Bond, the former Vertigo editor and vice president is getting her own imprint at IDW to curate entitled “Black Crown” which we posted about this morning here.

– IDW and Hasbro are partnering to create a comic inspired by the board game Clue.

Valiant 
– A new Bloodshot series from Jeff Lemire, Mico Suayan, and Lewis LaRosa is coming, entitled “Bloodshot Salvation” which will debut in the FCBD Valiant book before arriving in September. We covered it here.
– Valiant also revealed the “Harbinger Renegade” is heading to an upcoming storyline called “Massacre” which will feature the return of the HARD Corps and the death of a major Harbinger character.

Other 

– The Milkfed Criminal Masterminds panel (Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fraction’s studio) revealed that Chip Zdarsky and Annie Wu’s upcoming title is getting a name change from “The Recidivist” to “Mr. Recidivism.”
– Mark Wahlburg Stephen Levinson are set to produce an upcoming comic from Vault Comics called “Alien Bounty Hunter” with the hopes of turning it into a movie
– The Whedonverse celebrated 20 years in the comics business with a panel at ECCC and Bleeding Cool interviewed some of the creators here.
Richard Hamilton, the How To Train Your Dragon writer also announced an upcoming comic adaptation of Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhuntere which he is adapting with Marc Guggenheim.
Kodansha Comics also announced a “Ghost in the Shell” anthology, similar to their “Attack on Titan” one, titled “Ghost in the Shell: Global Neural Network” set for a Spring 2018 release.
