Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown on comic news stories we missed from the previous day. Have a link to share? Email our team at either david@multiversitycomics.com or brian@multiversitycomics.com.
– Joss Whedon goes into detail – with a fair amount of internal logic – about why Hank Pym wasn’t in The Avengers, and it can be boiled down to two basic statements: the character was Edgar Wright’s to build, and based on the way Pym’s story was progressing in his solo film, it just wouldn’t make sense for him to join the team until after his film.
– Supergirl has cast two new roles, both of which help you to understand the scope of the series in an interesting way. First, Laura Benati of Nashville and Law and Order: SVU has joined the cast as Supergirl’s Kryptonian mother, Alura. Also joining the show is Ally McBeal herself, Calista Flockheart, playing Metropolis’s third most famous reporter, Cat Grant. The focus on both Earth and Krypton is an interesting aspect of the show, and I look forward to seeing how they structure the series around that.
– Spinning out of “Secret Wars” is a new Jason Aaron/Chris Sprouse series called “Thors,” focusing on all the various Thor-esque characters of the Marvel Universe, including the new female Thor, our usual Odinson, Beta Ray Bill(!), Thunderstrike (!!), and more.
– If this report from “Deadline” can be believed, despite not being released until 2017, Wonder Woman will begin filming this fall.
– “Film Ink” has a cover story on the Netflix Daredevil series, which gives us the best look so far of the costume – yup, looks black to me. The series also appears to be teasing an Absorbing Man appearance.
– After the success of “Conan/Red Sonja,” Dark Horse and Dynamite are teaming up to bring you “Red Sonja/Conan,” scripted by Victor Girschler and an artist yet to be announced. Bleeding Cool has a few of the covers on display.
– And, finally, Sesame Street remains one of America’s greatest treasures, especially when they can parody Birdman in a way that no child could ever understand.
