– One of the more controversial announcements of DC’s ‘Rebirth’ initiative was the revelation that Frank Cho would be doing variant covers for “Wonder Woman.” Why was this controversial? Well, Cho has a bit of a reputation for sexualizing female characters, and the writer of “Wonder Woman,” Greg Rucka, has been one of the most prominent voices for not doing that. Rucka has written some of the most prominent women in comics, and always manages to give them more qualities than just their anatomy.
Anyway, that’s preamble to the fact that Cho walked off the book today after completing variants for the first six issues. Cho claims that Rucka himself is the reason why, claiming that Rucka was ‘censoring’ his work. Perhaps he means that he asked DC to crop the cover to #3 to remove her panty line? Regardless, this seems like a situation that won’t be resolved anytime soon and, with Rucka’s already tenuous history with DC, one that might be worth keeping your eye on.
– The long running Viz/Shonen Jump manga “Bleach,” written and illustrated by Tite Kubo, will be ending within the next ten weeks. The series, which has been running since 2001, will be collected into 74 volumes when finished.
– Two of DC’s cosmic characters are teaming up this fall for a six issue miniseries from Marc Andreyko and Aaron Lopresti. “Hawkman and Adam Strange: Out of Time” seemingly follows up on their time in “Justice League United,” and deals with the two trying to stop another war between Raan and Thanagar.
– Matt Kindt, currently writing and illustrating his creator-owned book “Dept. H” at Dark Horse, will be bringing another creator owned title to the publisher this fall. Kindt will be writing the series, entitled “Ether,” and it will be illustrated by David Rubin. The five-issue series will deal with a skeptical detective in a supernatural world.
– Brian Buccellato, Jennifer Young, and Matias Bergara will be launching “Cannibal” at Image later this year, about a town infected with a virus that makes its residents want to eat human flesh.
– From the ‘teenage Brian would be ecstatic!’ files, Tim Seeley, Scott Godlewski, Patricia Mulvihill, and Tony Harris (on covers) will be making a sequel to The Lost Boys at Vertigo. For those that aren’t familiar, the film was a horror comedy that dealt with vampires on the beach in California. It is glorious.
– “Plutonia,” the Image book by Jeff Lemire and Emi Lennox, has been optioned by Waypoint Entertainment for a hopeful film adaptation. Congrats, Jeff and Emi!
– And, finally, the name of the Legends of Tomorrow season finale will be…”Out of Time.”
