Welcome back to The Rundown, our daily breakdown on comic news stories we missed from the previous day. Have a link to share? Email our team at either david@multiversitycomics.com or brian@multiversitycomics.com.
– After 42 years of running a massive booth at San Diego Comic Con, Chuck Rozanski of Mile High Comics shares why it’s likely time for him to close up shop at SDCC and no longer have a booth. In specific, his booth has lost $10,000 at this years SDCC, and while it had far less inventory than the one he ran at Denver Comic Con (a much smaller convention), his booth there made double the money per hour. This contributes more to the ongoing theory that SDCC is hardly about comics at all, although Rozanski did note that it was comic publishers themselves cannibalizing his audience with costly SDCC exclusive variants. This is a sad day, and the potential end of an era for one of the most prominent comic retailers around.
– In yesterday’s Next Big Thing for Marvel at SDCC, they announced several new projects, including a new “S.H.I.E.L.D.” book from Mark Waid and rotating artists like Alan Davis and Chris Sprouse that follows the characters from Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” TV show, another “Death of Wolverine” mini (god only knows we need more of them) from Charles Soule and Salvador Larocca subtitled “The Weapon X Program” and that John Layman and Javier Garron would be taking over “Cyclops” with issue #6. A lot of comic news jammed into one panel on Sunday, but that’s some…well, it’s interesting stuff. Good for our boy Layman, though!
– In maybe the most unbelievable announcement from SDCC, Erik Burnham, Nacno Arranz and Esther Sanz are working on a “Galaxy Quest” series at IDW. I freaking love “Galaxy Quest” – it’s an amazing and hilarious movie – but man, that is the most random property ever to adapt, isn’t it? Regardless, I’m in for at least the #1. It’s such a great concept and Burnham is a good writer, so maybe this thing will work.
– In this interview with Brian Michael Bendis at CBR, it’s revealed that Multiversity fave and outgoing “Green Arrow” artist Andrea Sorrentino will be providing art on the upcoming “Uncanny X-Men Annual”. Good for Sorrentino, who will be making his Marvel debut with the book.
– “Transmetropolitan” and “Y the Last Man” are getting Absolute Editions from DC/Vertigo. Good call, DC/Vertigo.
– Here you can see all of the “Avengers: Age of Ultron” posters combined. Pretty damn cool stuff, I’d say.
– Lastly, Brian Michael Bendis will be guest starring in the upcoming “Nailbiter” #7, as he goes to Buckaroo, Oregon to research serial killers for a book. Here’s hoping he gets better treatment than Warren Ellis did in “Powers” all those years ago.
