Terror takes on a new form in “The Silver Coin,” a new horror anthology debuting this April from Image Comics. While many anthology books feature a wide array of artists, this new series will be drawn exclusively by artist Michael Walsh, with a rotating cast of writers including Jeff Lemire, Chip Zdarsky, Kelly Thompson, and Ed Brisson. Initially teased through a series of images across social media, this book follows a mysterious, supernatural coin that passes through many hands over the years, with chaos following along the way.
The premise behind “The Silver Coin” was initially devised by Walsh in the wake of his partnership with Lemire on the 2019 series “Black Hammer/Justice League: Hammer of Justice!” Describing the creation of the series, Walsh said “I was really pushing myself to move back into the world of creator owned comics. I thought for a while about how I could make all of these things happen and came up with the idea behind ‘The Silver Coin.’ A shared world where a bunch of writers can throw amazing and horrific ideas at me to draw the hell out of.”
The first issue of “The Silver Coin” teams Michael Walsh with writer Chip Zdarsky, for the tale of a struggling rock band who find the coin in 1978. Speaking of working with Walsh, Zdarsky said “Michael is such a talented artist with a real eye for horror, I’m pretty stunned with what he was able to do with my story.” He went on to say “it was really great being able to do these side by side with the other writers. Because we all started with the same basic premise and are working with Michael on art, it’s the perfect way to determine which of us is the best writing by comparing our final stories… Which means YOU, the READER, truly wins out!”
“The Silver Coin” #1 will be released in April with a connecting variant cover by Tula Lotay.
