Wow. How about that for some late evening news? The long rumored deal between Marvel and Sony has been finalized, as Spider-Man will be joining the Marvel cinematic universe very, very soon. According to the story at Marvel.com, Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel specific movie – house money is all over “Captain America: Civil War”, but maybe they’ll sneak a cameo into “Avengers: Age of Ultron” – before the next installment of the Spider-Man film series will be released on July 28, 2017 in a co-production between Sony and Marvel, with Kevin Feige and his team taking a big role with the character going forward.

While Sony maintains final creative control over the character, this is a major deal (obviously), and one that’s destined to have ramifications throughout the Marvel movies. Beyond that, Marvel cinematic universe characters are going to start appearing in Spider-Man films, making the two sides of the now very same coin even more cohesive overall.

I’m sure we’ll hear more on the roll out and what this means for Andrew Garfield, the current (and likely former, soon) Spider-Man, in the near future, but until we do…wow. That’s a hell of a thing. It has long been rumored, and now it’s a real thing. All I can think of is back at NYCC 2013 when a small kid in a Spider-Man costume asked a panel of Marvel writers and editors when Spidey would hang out with Iron Man and the Avengers in the movies. That kid is probably pretty amped right now. What about you?

All I can hope for is no more origin stories. Please, Kevin. No more.

Update: As part of this announcement, Marvel shuffled several of their upcoming movies. “Thor: Ragnarok” moves from July 28, 2017 (the date Spidey’s next movie now lives on) to November 3, 2017. That date previously was the release date for “Black Panther”, which now moves to July 6, 2018. “Inhumans” gets pushed to the Summer of 2019 from its November 2, 2017 release date, and lastly, “Captain Marvel” is now set to arrive November 2, 2018.
