"The Walking Dead," "Red" Bring in Golden Globe Nominations

It’s rare for comic book properties to rope in Award Season nominations of any real esteem. Sure, they get their fair share of Spike Awards and MTV Movie Awards, but rarely do they earn anything really classy.

This year is different, as both the adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s “Red” and the adaptation of Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard’s “The Walking Dead” earned Golden Globe nominations.

“Red” brought in a surprising nomination for “Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical” and will be squaring off against an odd list of competitors such as “Alice in Wonderland,” the much maligned “Burlesque,” the prohibitive favorite “The Kids Are All Right,” and “The Tourist.” In this situation, “Red” actually has a not horrible but still not likely chance of winning. Here’s hoping they pull it off.

Frank Darabont’s adaptation of “The Walking Dead” for AMC, on the other hand, has no shot even though it is fantastic. It’s not that it isn’t great, but it’s up against luminaries like “Mad Men” and “Boardwalk Empire” in the “Best Television Series – Drama” category. Throw in “Dexter” to steal some of the edgy gore vote, and you’ve got a really tough category for them to win. With that said, just getting nominated is nothing short of amazing.

Congrats to everyone involved. This is a big win for anyone that loves comics or makes comics.
