One of my favorite recent new talents to the world of film is Sharlto Copley. He made his major motion picture debut in Neill Blomkamp’s stunning sci-fi film “District 9”, and he blew everyone away with the weight and charm he brought to a role that the whole movie was built on. Since then, he’s done a tremendous job in roles as diverse as Murdock in “The A-Team”, the villain in “Maleficent” and he even managed to do something worthwhile in the surprisingly dull “Elysium.” The dude can act.
Which is why it’s all the more exciting for us (and certainly Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming) that he’s been cast as the lead – Christian Walker – in the upcoming TV series of “Powers” on the Playstation Network. Many will hem and haw about the casting due to the size discrepancy (Walker is a bit of a beefy dude), but if you want power, that’s certainly something Copley can bring to a role. That’s a hell of a casting job.
Retro Girl was also cast, as Michelle Forbes (“Battlestar Galactica”) was selected for the role. She’s a fine actress working on an admittedly small part (although who knows what direction the show will take), and the cast is really rounding out into something worthwhile. Especially with Copley onboard.
The show is set to debut in December on The Playstation Network, which is crazy because it’s August and they just cast their lead. But whatevs. We’re especially looking forward to it now, even if I have literally no idea how I can watch it without a PS4. I guess I’ll find out in December!
