Marvel Comics have announced, via IGN, that writer Kelly Thompson and artist Elena Casagrande will be relaunching “Black Widow.” Adam Hughes will be supplying the cover art for the series.

The series will see Natasha Romanoff’s “world… upended,” and tasked with solving a mystery that lies “beyond San Francisco’s Golden Gate.” While most of the plot details for the series were left under wraps, Thompson did reveal some of the characters that will be appearing in the series, specifically Red Guardian and Yelena Belova, both of whom she “was on the fence about using” because she didn’t want to be retracing Black Widow’s history, but eventually found a way that felt like the “best of both worlds.”

Thompson described how she believes Natasha is an “incredibly rich character in that she works well in a lot of different genres,” but realizes that this can affect having a “clear vision” for the character. She continued to detail that she is particularly interested in the “duality of Natasha” and that this will be a recurring theme throughout the first arc of the series, as Natasha “struggles against that and leans into it.” Casagrande’s artwork will also show this “duality,” with Thompson teasing it as “something we never get to see with Natasha… a softer side is maybe the best way to describe it?”

“Black Widow” #1 will be released in April, alongside several other titles featuring Black Widow and more characters from the movie before its release on May 1.
