Starting with issue #622, Thor shall be retitled to it’s original title, Journey Into Mystery, with Kieron Gillen and Doug Braithwaite (Secret Invasion: Thor) both returning to the title. Kieron Gillen’s run on Thor, while brief and somewhat of a segue between JMS and Fraction, was applauded universally amongst fans and critics (specifically us, who adored the run), so his return to the characters is well celebrated. As Gillen explains on his Twitter and in the post from Marvel.com, the basic rundown of title comparison is “THE MIGHTY THOR = AVENGERS. JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY = SECRET AVENGERS.” The book will star mostly Loki with a rotating cast, as Gillen notes, “JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY sneaks in the back door and ends the threat with a single strike. MIGHTY THOR doesn’t know that JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY exists, despite Thor being in it. It’s a mythological black-ops comic, with a rotating team organized by the most Machiavellian figure in the whole Norse pantheon.” Gillen also notes Sandman as an influence of how the book will continue on past the first arc, as well as adding that it will tie into Fear Itself closely.
Gillen also promises that the first arc of the book will explain “95%” of the mystery behind Loki’s death – why he chose to kill himself, and the oddity of how he came back.
Fraction and Gillen are quickly becoming quite the duo writing team, with both writers now handling both the X-Men duties as well as Thor duties. I almost wouldn’t be surprised of Gillen got his own Iron Man book at this point. For more information on the upcoming title, check out Marvel.com.
