With less than three months to go before its theatrical July 8 release, Marvel have finally released the teaser trailer for Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder:
Set to Guns N’ Roses’s “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” the trailer finds Thor in a contemplative mood after Avengers: Endgame, pondering what he wants in life now that the universe is at peace, and New Asgard, Tønsberg, is being ruled by (a very bored) King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson). As Marvel’s official synopsis reminds us, Thor’s “retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods,” but there’s no sign of him here, the emphasis instead being placed on the Guardians of the Galaxy’s appearance, and the realm of Olympus, ruled by Zeus (Russell Crowe, shown only in profile). However, we do see Thor and Korg (Waititi) discovering the slain body of Falligar the Behemoth, the god of the Galactic Frontier, in a shot ripped straight from the panels of Jason Aaron and Esad Ribić’s “Thor: God of Thunder” run.
Jane Foster (Natalie Portman)’s transformation into the new Thor, and the reassembled Mjolnir (which was destroyed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok) are only shown at the end, during what appears to be a riot in New Asgard. The trailer also shows a younger Thor, wearing the original costume designed by Jack Kirby; a new fur-lined cape for our hero; Thor getting back into shape after Endgame, while wearing a hat reading “The Strongest of the Avengers;” the goats Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder pulling an Asgardian ship; Stormbreaker being used to summon the Bifrost; and Thor getting romantic with a blue-haired pirate on an actual boat.
Thor: Love and Thunder releases July 8, two months after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 6. In the meantime, also check out the poster:
