IDW imprint Top Shelf Productions have announced “Cosmoknights,” a new sci-fi webcomic from artist/writer Hannah Templer (“Jem and The Holograms: Dimensions,” IDW’s upcoming “GLOW” comic). The comic follows Pan, a mechanic who encounters gladiators from another world, fighting for the hand of a princess — eventually leading her to become part of a resistance movement made up entirely of women. The comic will commence serialization online at www.cosmoknights.space/ in March, and a collected print edition will follow this fall.

In the announcement at The Hollywood Reporter, Templer said, “I first came up with ‘Cosmoknights’ back in 2016 while wrestling with issues in my own life around gender, sexuality, marriage, and the culture I was raised in. So, as I was sketching characters and situations, they pretty naturally materialized into a story about queer women fighting tooth-and-nail for their independence.”

She describes the comic as having a “neo-medieval setting,” “where technology is advanced but gender roles are bound by these archaic rituals of jousting and costumes and prizes… of ‘winning’ someone’s ‘hand’ in marriage. But despite the potentially challenging subject matter, it was important to me to steer clear of doom and gloom — it’s a fun sci-fi comic about friendship, romance and kicking ass.”

You can check out Templer’s concept art for the series at her website, and hear more from her in the Reporter‘s interview, as well as at a presentation during the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting next week. The print edition is available to preorder now.
