A new YA original graphic novel, “Unikorn,” by writers Don Handfield & Joshua Malkin and artist Rafael Loureiro, will be published by Scout Comics and Simon & Schuster, with a film adaptation already lined up by Armory Films.
“Unikorn” will follow teenage girl Maeve Everhart, as she inherits an old horse named Percival. Percival has a bump in the middle of his forehead which leads Maeve to believe that he is a real-life unicorn, a theory which only grows when Percival miraculously heals her after she gets hurt in the barn. Following this, Maeve has to defend Percival from those seeking to exploit or harm him.
“Unikorn” will be the first entry in ‘The Keeper Chronicles,’ a series of young adult graphic novels that will follow Maeve as she inherits a farm in rural Pennsylvania, which is filled with seemingly normal animals, only to find that they are all secretly mythical beings that she must protect from exploitation and harm.
The Unikorn movie is being developed by Armory Films, who developed and financed the graphic novel, with Captain Marvel and Black Panther editor Debbie Berman set to make her directorial debut. In a statement, Armory Films co-founders Chris Lemole and Tim Zajaros said, “‘Unikorn’ has heart, humor and ultimately leaves you feeling inspired and hopeful,” adding, “With Debbie Berman at the helm, this film is destined to be a magical feel-good adventure that will be remembered for decades to come.” Handfield and Malkin will be involved with adaptation, with Handfield serving as a producer alongisde Lemole and Zajaros.
“Unikorn” is scheduled to be released in 2021, while the film adaptation is currently without a release date.
