Updated (10/8/2014): Now with high-res images!
So, as much as we’ve made a bunch of noise about the fact that all of the information for “AXIS” is online before the first issue is in stores, Marvel has kept a few things close to the vest vis a vis certain plot aspects. As such, with whatever what we’re going to show today is in regards to, it is very much a spoiler. If you don’t want to know, don’t look.
For those that do want to know more, keep scrolling.
Last week we wrote about the finale of “AXIS” in our Soliciting Multiversity column, showing off the cover to “AXIS” #9. The cover features a lot of characters swirling around the Red Skull’s head, one of which is blacked out for whatever reason.
But in Previews, the image appeared unedited:
And if you zoom in, the figure has a few fairly recognizable features; specifically: a red cape, a green sash, a black outfit, and a skull on his hip…
(Last chance to avoid spoilers!)
…revealing the figure to be none other than:
Brother Voodoo!
Why Marvel would choose to black out the inclusion of Brother Voodoo is a bit unknown. Upgraded to Doctor as he became the new Sorcerer Supreme, Jericho Drumm died pretty quickly into his tenure as Supreme, with his ghostly brother Daniel vowing revenge on the Avengers for letting this happen — something we saw in the finale to Bendis’ run of “New Avengers” in the arc ‘War Drumm.’ Daniel was defeated by the New Avengers, with Doctor Strange appealing to dark magic in order to take him down, but Jericho himself still remains in the void.
Now Jericho is back, or Daniel is inhabiting his body, and one way or the other Brother/Doctor Voodoo will be involved in “AXIS” somehow. I suppose it is worth noting that Remender, writer of “AXIS,” was slated to write a “Doctor Voodoo” ongoing that was cancelled after a six issue run; while it was actually quite good, it never really took hold enough to justify its full run — though the trade collecting it all is definitely worth a read.
So why was Voodoo censored from our eyes before? Your guess is as good as mine, but we’ll find out soon I imagine.
