Up, Up and Away: Our First Look at CBS’ ‘Supergirl’

I’m going to cut the preamble: this trailer is perfect. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a huge fan (probably too much) of all things Superman and when Supergirl was announced for CBS, I was a little hesitant, I have to admit. You know, I saw that Wonder Woman pilot for NBC and the last thing I wanted was for the show to turn out like that.

Thankfully, it looks like it won’t as this trailer hits every point it needed to make perfectly. So, let me break it down: Melissa Benoist is pretty much perfect as Kara. Having seen her in Whiplash, I had a lot of faith in her and she pulls off all aspects of Kara here. While Superman represents the responsibility that comes with having power, Supergirl should represent the freedom of being young and being able to fly and Benoist clearly gets that. She embraces the idea that being able to fly, being bulletproof, being able to save people shouldn’t be a burdern, but it should be liberating.

On top of that, the show entrenches itself firmly into the mythos of Superman with Jimmy Olsen showing up and a surprising amount of references to Kara’s “cousin” while keeping itself at arm’s length from the drab, overbearing world of Man Of Steel. Could it be possible to get a Superman who smiles again?

The point is: this looks fun. And that’s exactly how a Supergirl show should look. This trailer nails it and I am all in on this show already.

Supergirl will begin airing on CBS in November on Monday nights at 8PM.

Up, up, and away.

Alice W. Castle

Sworn to protect a world that hates and fears her, Alice W. Castle is a trans femme writing about comics. All things considered, it’s going surprisingly well. Ask her about the unproduced Superman films of 1990 - 2006. She can be found on various corners of the internet, but most frequently on Twitter: @alicewcastle
