Vault Comics have announced this year’s series from their annual horror imprint, Nightfall, will be “The Autumnal,” by author Daniel Kraus (Trollhunters), artist Chris Shehan (“Prometheus”), colorist Jason Wordie, letterer Jim Campbell, and designs by Nightfall curator Tim Daniel. The first issue will have covers by Chris Shehan, Nathan Gooden, and Tim Daniel.

The series will be set in the fall and follow the mother-daughter duo of Kat Somerville and her daughter Sybil as they flee Chicago to Comfort Notch, New Hampshire, following the death of Kat’s estranged mother. In a statement, Kraus spoke about how, across his ten novels, he’s written about monsters, but they were human, or sympathic, saying “I still had a hankering to create an original, frightening, supernatural thing that had a shot at being iconic.”

He also teased more of the series’ story details: “While discussing horror with friends, I stumbled upon the concept of fallen leaves being like stepping stones for some kind of forest monster — a pathway it could use to follow you home and so forth.” Shehan said, “My goal with this book is to move you, scare you, make you laugh and make you cry with my art. This story has haunted me in the best way and I’m excited and grateful to be able to pass that on to you.”

“The Autumnal” #1 is scheduled for release on September 23. You can head over to CBR for a look at Chris Shehan and Tim Daniel’s covers, as well as some preview pages.
