Vault Comics have announced a new horror series by the creative team of writer Mark Russell, artist Benjamin Tiesma, colorist Vladimir Popov, and designer Tim Daniel, called “Deadbox.”
“Deadbox” will see a cursed DVD rental kiosk causing havoc in the town of Lost Turkey; the rental kiosk’s films, rather than a source of entertainment, are actually a dark mirrored version of the renter’s life, and could potentially reveal all of their secrets. Watching any of the kiosk’s films causes viewers to lose their minds. Each issue of the series will put a darker twist on some of the most famous styles and genres of film, with the art style changing to reflect the types of movies featured in the comic.
The book marks Russell’s first horror comic. He said, in writing “Deadbox,” that he wanted to explore “the feeling of being trapped, boxed if you will, in a town that doesn’t get you and a place you will never feel at home in no matter how long you live there.” He admitted that the story is “deeply personal to me, even though it’s about something as goofy as haunted movies,” because when he was younger he felt “trapped by his upbringing and sought personal escape in movies.”
“Deadbox” #1 is set for release in comic book stores and on digital platforms in August. Corin Howell will provide the variant covers for the series, and you can see the first issue’s here.
