You read that right. Fox is going all-in on Spider-Man, as they have revealed that sometime in the future – presumably after the third “Amazing Spider-Man” – there will be “Venom” and “Sinister Six” standalone films. The former is set to be written and directed by Roberto Orci, while the latter is coming from Drew Goddard, but the entire project is being realized by a quintet of writers that include Orci and Goddard as well as Alex Kurtzman, Jeff Pinker and Ed Solomon.
Why they are turning everything over to villains is uncertain. Maybe Andrew Garfield is drawing a hardline on being Spidey past the third film, maybe they think given the grim and gritty trend villains are going to be mega hits, maybe they’re running out of ideas. I’m not sure, but either way, this explains why they have so damn many villains in the second “Amazing Spider-Man”.
The quintet of writers are set to expand the Spidey film universe with the help of director Marc Webb and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, but given the decision making to date, I fear their next choice may be a “Stilt Man” movie. God I hope they make a Stilt Man movie.
Sound off on this in the comments. “Amazing Spider-Man 2” comes out May 2, 2014.
