Because “Fables” is the single most profitable Vertigo title right now (and, well, one of the few left), it looks like there are still plans to bank on the success of the series as announced at USA Today.

The first is a “Fables” encyclopedia compiled by Jess Nevins, who does those wonderful “League of Extraordinary Gentleman” annotations. The blurb on the book is:

All the rich history that you¹ve forgotten about your favorite fairytale characters is eloquently retold by noted scholar Jess Nevins (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Companion). Each entry will include the character¹s historical origin and Fables reinvention as well as first appearances and whimsical antidotes from creator Bill Willingham and regular series artist Mark Buckingham. The book will feature a wraparound cover by Adam Hughes.

In addition to that, a new OGN will be released as part of the “Fairest” spin-off series, featuring stories as told by the Magic Mirror, written by Willingham and featuring a bevy of artists.

Written by Willingham and narrated by the Magic Mirror, (the book) features short stories with a framing device (not unlike the storytelling conceit in Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall) illustrated by some the finest artists in comics, including Adam Hughes, Chrissie Zullo, Mark Chiarello, Karl Kerschl and more. The book will feature a wraparound cover by Adam Hughes.

Both books are expected in the fall.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
