Vertigo To Lose OGNs?

I don’t think anyone here doubts the impressive line-up available from DC’s Vertigo comics. However, I suppose only a few of you might follow their collections of original graphic novels, both in the crime genre as well as just general output. However, it looks like the sales of them just aren’t high enough to sustain the further production of any new original Vertigo hardcovers, according to a report coming out of Comics Pro.
This has been a long time coming, but according to a new round up of news from Bleeding Cool, Vertigo will be cutting back on the hardcovers to focus on the serialised comic books. As the post says via a report from a DC senior exec, “they just don’t bring in the revenue spent on them, and this was the main reason Vertigo lost three editors last year. The current line are the books that were too far along in the production cycle to cancel.” Which is sad to hear and see, but a quick Google search (as well as a look on my shelf, honestly) reveals not too many reviews of the original hardcovers, so I could only imagine what the sales figures look like.
This isn’t neccesarily a bad thing. Looking at books like American Vampire and Sweet Tooth, one could say that focusing on the single issue stories are generally a good thing. However, the loss of that angle for creators to put out new works is still sad regardless.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
