Cartoonist David Jesus Vignolli has announced his new project, “New World,” a graphic novel that is set to be published by BOOM! Studios’s imprint, Archaia, next year.

The new story is aimed at highlighting the lesser known perspective of the discovery of the Americas. The graphic novel involves a trio that are united in opposition: a “Native Indian,” an enslaved African musician, and a Portuguese sailor, seeking revenge, freedom and redemption, respectively. Together, they will “will work together to free the New World from the darkness of the old.”
The project has allowed Vignolli to delve deeper into his heritage because he has a “black mother originating from the slaves brought to Brazil by Portuguese sailors and a white father whose forefathers came from Portugal and Italy and, somewhere along the way some Native Indian folks in [his] family tree.” The story is, in some respects, about “how [he] came into being.” Vignolli detailed the graphic novel further by explaining the story will be “a fantasy… based on real historical facts.”
This will be the second of Vignolli’s work to be published at Archaia following this year’s “A Girl In The Himalayas,” which told the story of a young girl and a magical sanctuary high in the Himalayas. In addition to this, Vignolli has a webcomic, “Planet Earth: for sale” on his website.
“New World” is set for release in August 2019. In the meantime, head on over to The Beat for some early artwork.
