“Wall of Balloons” Shows the Comic Love in the Great White North

Fellow MC writer Brandon Burpee and myself are denizens of the greatest fringe of American comic book fans – Alaska. Very rarely do we have any of the cool events like you all do. The signings, the conventions, the chance encounters with comic creators in local shops – it just doesn’t really happen here. Such is life.

But a contingent of major comic fans in Fairbanks, Alaska are putting together an amazing DIY celebration of the comic book form this month, as “Wall of Balloons” debuts June 30th at the Wood Center Lounge. The event will feature an array of panels and workshops for fans of all levels of experience, whether you’re new to the art form or a writer or artist yourself (and if you don’t believe those exist, feel free to ask Brandon Seifert, Lukas Ketner or Dustin Weaver if you see them at a convention).

In the evening, cartoonist and musician Jeffrey Lewis will cap the night with a performance with his band, bringing the world of comics just a little bit closer to the pop culture center.

Sure, this is news that almost none of our readers will be able to act on, but I wanted the passion and ingenuity of comic fans the world over to be known. This is a very cool event that could inspire the next great creator or a bevy of new fans, and if we’re not supporting that, what should we be supporting?

Check out their Facebook page as well, and if you’re a kind hearted creator, contact them and send them some cool swag to help make their event even better.
