Nightcrawler is taking back the spotlight in the pages of “Way of X,” a new series announced today by Marvel Comics. Written by Si Spurrier with art by Bob Quinn, the first issue will be coming out in April, and picks up in the wake of ‘X of Swords,’ as the cracks begin to form in the new mutant society on Krakoa. As Marvel put it in their release, “Mutantkind has built a new Eden… but there are serpents in this garden. Some mutants struggle to fit in. Some mutants turn to violence and death. And the children whisper of the Patchwork Man, singing in their hearts…” Giuseppe Camuncoli has provided the first cover for the series.
Spurrier is no stranger to the world of the X-Men, having previously written “X-Force” and the acclaimed “X-Men Legacy” series. Spurrier said, “Nightcrawler realizes something’s wrong with the hearts and minds of mutantkind and sets out to fix it. But as he quickly discovers, this isn’t a job for priests and prayers… The question is, what do they have to become in order to fight it? Preachers? Cops? Executioners? Or something entirely new?” Coincidentally, Nightcrawler’s previous occupations include priesthood.
Joining Spurrier is artist Bob Quinn, who previously worked on “Uncanny X-Men” prior to the ‘Dawn of X,’ but has more recently enjoyed stints on “Captain America,” “Fantastic Four,” and “Champions.” Quinn said of the title, “I’m incredibly excited that Marvel gave me the opportunity to launch a new X-Men series with Si. Nightcrawler is one of my favorite X-Men, and he along with the recent developments in the X-Men universe really gives us the opportunity to explore some pretty wild concepts and ideas. Bringing them to life is really a dream come true.”
The series is the latest in the ‘Reign of X’ status quo for the X-Men. Nightcrawler was previously spotlighted last year in an issue of “Giant-Sized X-Men” by Jonathan Hickman and Alan Davis, and has also featured into the current “Marauders” and “Hellions” titles. Fleshing out the supporting cast of this new series will be Dr. Nemesis, as well as fellow teleporters Pixie and Blink.
