We Shall All Be Healed: “Casanova” Returns in January for ‘Volume 4: Acedia’

We speculated it based on the upcoming Image hardcovers and we speculated right: as announced in today’s Image solicits, Matt Fraction’s “Casanova” returns for its fourth volume, ‘Acedia.’

The latest volume will feature main art by Fábio Moon and pick up where v3 ended (the first of three trilogies) as Casanova is stuck in an alternate reality version of Los Angeles. Not only that, but the new volume will come with back-ups written by celebrated author Michael Chabon and art by Gabriel Bá, which is exciting as the previous three volumes rotated between Moon and Bá and now they’re both here the whole time. Wonderful.

Before I reveal the presence of my bias, here is the solicit for you:

CASANOVA: ACEDIA #1
STORY: MATT FRACTION & MICHAEL CHABON
ART / COVER: FÁBIO MOON & GABRIEL BÁ

JANUARY 7 / 32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.99

Marooned in Los Angeles with no memory of his past, Casanova Quinn takes on the mystery of his criminal benefactor’s tangled and bloody history—as strange occult forces from the future conspire to… do stuff? To him? To Los Angeles? To you? YES.

Featuring the first in a series of backup stories by Pulitzer Prize winner MICHAEL CHABON and CASANOVA co-creator GABRIEL BÁ.

So, OK, lets do away with the pretense of objective reporting for a second. Cool? Cool.

“Casanova” is my favorite comic book, hands down. It’s wild, it’s weird, it’s personal, it’s funny, it’s beautiful, it’s challenging — it’s a story only comics can tell, it’s all the more wonderful because of that. “Casanova” is one of the books to which I measure all other comics I read because it gives me what I want from comics, and as someone that has bought the book in at least three iterations now I can’t recommend it enough. It’s easily one of the few books that I find myself getting lost in every time I read it, and that’s about the highest possible praise I could give it or anything.

From Image to Icon and back to Image, they could announce that “Casanova” is moving to something like Zenescope and I’d still be excited. Lucky for us it’s at Image along with three new hardcovers, the first of which should be out soon (originally solicited for this week, but I can’t find verification it’s coming out) featuring every backmatter ever as extra material, so all is well, all is good and the universe is full of love.

If you’re new to “Casanova,” don’t even hesitate. If you’re familiar with “Casanova,” join me in anxiously waiting for the arrival of ‘Acedia,’ which I might be guilty of over-hyping for myself right now but I don’t care because. In the meantime lets just make Mountain Goats references and re-read the books for the zillionth time, because Casanova Quinn is coming back.

“Casanova v4: Acedia” #1 will arrive January 7th, the first full week of the new year, setting the bar and dooming comics for all of 2015.

Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
