Wednesday Comics Hardcover Revealed

DC’s blog The Source shared a first look at their collected hardcover edition of Wednesday Comics today, and it’s stunning. Wednesday Comics was their weekly series from 2009 that featured one page stories told in a newspaper strip format, but with an all star cast of characters and creators. Many wondered how it would be collected, as it was a very unique format. Apparently the team over at DC didn’t have the same questions, as it looks to be an exceptional release.

While conceptually I absolutely loved Wednesday Comics, I can tell you that the newspaper format and the one page a week storytelling did not work for me. There were also a number of stories that I genuinely did not enjoy, so I found myself either dreading the read or skipping it altogether.

However, now seeing this collected edition I can say I will be definitely picking this up. Where else can you find work from phenomenal creators like 100 Bullets team Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, Neil Gaiman, Mike Allred, Karl Kerschl, Dave Gibbons, Ryan Sook, Kurt Busiek, Paul Pope, and both Adam and Joe Kubert in one title? Well, nowhere else. The level of talent involved is staggering, and is worth a shot if only for that reason.

Throw in extra pages like a story starring The Creeper from Keith Giffen and Eric Canete, a Plastic Man story from Evan Dorkin and Stephen DeStefano, and sketchbooks from all of the artists, and this is a hugely worthwhile venture. Plus, if you preorder now from Amazon it’s just $31.49 (released June 1st). That’s a lot of awesome for a low cost.
