Weekend Update: “Avenging Spider-Man” Goes Through Some Changes

The other day, I wrote far to much about how much I love Spider-Man and Zeb Wells’ work on “Avenging Spider-Man” (and you guys seemed to like it, so thanks!). However, at the same time I lamented the fact that Wells was not solicited for future work on the title, as the next issue is part of “the Omega Effect” crossover by Rucka and Waid and following that is an Immonen team-up featuring a She-Hulk team-up. It’s not that I dislike any of those creators as they’re all talented, but you know how it is.

In this Friday’s Axel-In-Charge over at CBR, someone named scouse mouse asked the question that was on my mind — when is Zeb Wells coming back? And Joe Madureira as well? Alonso turned it over to Spidey editor Stephen Wacker, who shed some light on the subject:

Joe [Madueira] and Zeb [Wells’] new Spidey/Wolverine/Elektra story has changed shape and is becoming a slightly bigger project. In addition, Dan Slott’s plan for “Amazing Spider-Man” has grown in scope and will affect just about every Spidey-related book in its wake. So, while Zeb and Joe get ready for their big project, we’ve got some big “Avenging Spidey” stories in the pipe, written an drawn by some of the biggest names in comics…before — drum roll, please — Chris Yost comes on as new regular writer, working closely with Slott to reflect some of the big Spidey events coming up soon.

Ok, so Wells and Madureira are working on a Spidey/Elektra team-up book (the art on the left is probably from that book, truthfully) that will probably be pretty damn great, given Wells’ past work with Elektra, and Chris Yost will be the ongoing writer soon after a few of the “biggest names in comics” write some stories. Alright, cool.

The CBR post also included art from Chris Samnee and Gabrielle Dell’Otto with credits to “Avenging Spider-Man”, so you can probably assume they’ll be on the book in the near future.

OH, and the cover to issue #9 (seen above) features art by Terry Dodson and a team-up between Spidey and Captain Marvel. I wonder who is writing that? Hey, isn’t Kelly Sue DeConnick writing “Captain Marvel”? Hmm. Probably unrelated though.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
