Following up from the teasers of Zeb Wells and Joe Madureira teaming up once again to tell a Spider-Man and Wolverine team-up story comes news from CBR that the story will be taking place in “Savage Wolverine”. I, like most people, had assumed it would be taking place in “Avenging Spider-Man”, but instead it seems like “Savage Wolverine” will be operating on the same wavelength as that title: short, self-contained stories by different creative teams. Unless we’re to expect Frank Cho back once Wells and Mad have wrapped up.
The story is set to focus on Wolverine as he teams up with both Spider-Man and Elektra to take on the Hand (who shouldn’t need an introduction at this point). Madureira explained to CBR that he feels like the story really captures the classic spirit of a Wolverine story.
This feels like a pretty classic Wolverine story. For some reason, despite the decades worth of Wolverine stories that have been done, there are only two versions of Wolverine that resonate or sort of define the character for me. One is the feral naked guy in the woods hunting deer and surviving on his animal instincts; the other is fighting ninja in Japan alongside Mariko. I think it’s because these were the stories I was reading at the height of my comic obsession, and I was thrilled that this story took me back to those days. There’s an awesome bit of nostalgia that hits me when I draw Wolverine slicing through a ninja. Is that crazy?
I imagine that we’ll learn more about the issues the arc will cover in Marvel’s June solicitations, but in the mean time be sure to check out CBR’s interview with Wells and Madureira.
