What Is Sterling Gates Teasing Us?

By now you’ve all read Walt’s review of Supergirl Annual #2, so let’s take a second here to talk about something I noticed while reading.

The above panel is a brief interaction between Supergirl is obviously “not meant to hear” while she’s hanging out with the Legion. Despite not wanting her to know about her own future, Brainy mentions three events: the Scion of Superwoman, the Deadly Day of the Dollmaker, and Lex Luthor’s other son. Me being the astute reader that I am now have to wonder – what does Gates have planned?

A quick thought process on the event names:

  • A scion is a descendant, and Superwoman was the first “big bad” Gates created for Supergirl (for those that didn’t read the arc, Superwoman was Lois’ sister Lucy, who was working for General Lane), so quite literally the event is “the descendant of Superwoman.” Last we saw Lucy, she was in custody at STAR Labs, but at the beginning of Bizarro Girl’s arc it was hinted she was getting out.
  • The Deadly Day Of The Dollmaker is the silliest title I’ve ever heard, but perfectly cheesy. It’s also been solicited, kinda sorta (and look at what name is mentioned in the solicit). That deadly part doesn’t sound good for Cat Grant, though.
  • Lex Luthor’s OTHER son is the interesting one to me, especially with Conner about to get his own book. Is this something that will tie into Superboy at all, or does Gates have something evil planned for the poor family? And does it have something to maybe do with Cornell’s Lois-bot? Because if so… huh.

For those who don’t know, Gates was one of the co-architects throughout all of New Krypton as paired up with Geoff Johns, and he co-wrote the Fall of New Krypton and the War of the Supermen. While Gates is leaving the Supergirl book, he is fully responsible for making it the FANTASTIC title that it is today. So with his leave imminent, what do these three “set events” mean? And when will they happen?

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
