The creative pair behind “4 Kids Walk Into A Bank,” writer Matthew Rosenberg (“Multiple Man,” “Hawkeye: Freefall”) and artist Tyler Boss (“Dead Dog’s Bite,” “TMNT: Universe”) are reuniting at Image Comics for the post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, family drama “What’s the Furthest Place From Here?” The ongoing series, debuting in November, will feature lettering from Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.
The story begins with a girl named Sid leaving behind her family of young survivors to see if the world has anything more to offer than mere survival. “What’s the Furthest Place From Here?” follows the family she left behind as they journey the apocalypse to try and find her, navigating a world where vinyl records are the most valuable resource left.
“’What’s The Furthest Place From Here?’ is a book Tyler and I have been working on in one form or another since before we even finished ‘4 Kids Walk Into A Bank,’” said Rosenberg. “We wanted to push ourselves to do a lot of things we didn’t do in that book. We wanted to take the time to build a big science fiction world, tell an epic fantasy adventure, dabble in horror and mystery, and really try to make something on a scale that could only be done in an ongoing comic series and really only done at Image Comics. It’s still a deeply personal, character-driven story with all the humor and heart that readers expect from both of us. I guess that’s the pretentious way of saying we’re taking risks and making something very new to us but our fans and new readers will still like it.”

The series was originally announced at the Image Expo in 2018, and was slated for an earlier release. This new announcement of the series however, comes with new details around the deluxe edition of the first issue. It includes a 60-page comic and a unique vinyl record featuring new music from Joyce Manor and Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker and Jets to Brazil for US$14.99. These will only be available in limited quantities, with every issue of the series featuring a deluxe edition carrying a new, unique accompanying record.
“We wanted to make this big playground for our characters to go and tell their stories in,” Boss added. “Part of that was building a Silmarillion-sized knowledge of this place so we knew what the rules are and why the rules are. Even if we don’t always share it in the book, we have the answers to any questions we might ask ourselves down the line. But ultimately we’re telling a story about growing up and outgrowing the things you thought you’d always care about, and seeing the world change and trying to figure out if that will change you. It’s also about found families and the fear of becoming your parents. Only we’re doing it in this big post-apocalyptic way.”
“What’s the Furthest Place From Here?” #1 will be an oversized issue available for $4.99, featuring a main cover by Boss and variants from Marcos Martin, Skottie Young and Brian Michael Bendis, plus some rarer incentive covers from Martin Simmonds (1:25), Courtney Menard (1:50) and Jenny Frison (1:75 and 1:100).
