Whedon to Direct "The Avengers"…Probably?

According to Deadline, Marvel is in final negotiations to bring industry demigod and all around great guy Joss Whedon onboard to direct The Avengers. As you may recall, we originally reported this on April Fool’s Day from a story posted by IESB, but now more sources are claiming that it’s basically a done deal.

While Whedon has long been considered a creative genius, he’s never really made it in terms of being a commercial success as his directorial debut Serenity (a continuation of his TV series Firefly) only made $25 million domestically and his recent TV offerings (since his watershed series Buffy the Vampire Slayer) have died fairly quick deaths. Still, he’s walking into about as sure of a shot for making money as you can get, with this film set to star Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth as Iron Man, Nick Fury, Captain America, and Thor respectively.

To me, with the money making aspect set in stone, I’m glad they’re going with a director with significant knowledge of the world of comics as well as someone that is more known for skill and creativity than style and vapid films (see: Louis Leterrier). We’ll get more about this as it comes around, but here’s hoping the very strong rumors are true.

The Avengers are set to assemble the first weekend of May, 2012.
