With the success of Avengers already well established, Marvel is beginning to point their sites on their next set of films. Given the amount of media coverage going around, you can rest assured that the next two films from Marvel you’ll be seeing are Iron Man 3 and Thor 2. With all the reports of Iron Man 3 pointing all signs to the villain being Mandarin (at least, the current iteration of the character and assumedly being played by Ben Kingsley) and taking elements from the ‘Extremis’ arc of the book by Warren Ellis, the question remains: what’s up with Thor 2?
We know very little at this point, truth be told. It’ll assumedly follow the events of the Avengers and not Thor, most of the main cast will be back and, according to Kevin Feige in a recent interview, it will feature a major villain, assumedly portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen, and it will not feature Thanos.
If you take into consideration that rumor floating around that Enchantress is the villain of the film, it’s worth noting that she usually pals around in classic Thor stories with Skurge the Executioner, a big guy who Mads could conceivably play, and that the duo have often times worked with Loki against Thor. They’ve even been used as a nefarious duo in the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon, so kids seeing these movies wouldn’t be that unfamiliar with them even if the adults might.
Plus, it could easily work as the plot writes itself: they can use the original story of Enchantress sent by Odin to remove Jane Foster (who has been confirmed as a returning character) from the equation, or Loki could get her to do it for his next grand manipulation, and with the help of Skurge she does so. However, Thor (though really Donald Blake)’s love for Foster is so great that Enchantress’ plan ultimately fails and leads to fighting. Done!
Yet, despite Enchantress and Executioner’s schemes with and without Loki, but I wouldn’t call either of them “major” villains. Not when compared to someone like Surtur, for example, but somehow I don’t think we’re going to get that. So the question is: are we looking at a major Thor villain, or a major Marvel Universe villain? We already have Thanos in the background now, so the second one seems unlikely, but you never know.
Who do you think Mads Mikkelsen is playing in Thor 2? And why?
