Wonder Woman 1984 star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins unveiled the official trailer during this afternoon’s panel at the Comic Con Experience (CCXP) in Brazil:
Set to “Blue Monday” by New Order, the trailer establishes Diana Prince as a public superhero in the previously unseen era of 1984, battling criminals in a mall. We’re also introduced to Kristen Wiig as the shy, nerdy Barbara Minerva, and Pedro Pascal as the yuppie entrepreneur Maxwell Lord, before the reintroduction of Chris Pine’s mysteriously resurrected Steve Trevor.
The trailer’s second half montage shows Diana and Steve battling gunmen in Washington D.C.; the duo getting involved in chaos in the Middle East; new flashbacks to Diana’s youth in Themiscyra; Minerva emerging in a new, more confident state as she begins transforming into Wonder Woman’s nemesis Cheetah; and Wonder Woman using the Lasso of Truth to ride lightning. Finally (before a light-hearted denouement depicting Steve getting used to the idea of modern art), we see Diana decked out in the full Golden Eagle armor, ripped straight from the pages of Mark Waid and Alex Ross’s “Kingdom Come.”
At the panel, Jenkins explained she and writers Geoff Johns and David Callaham settled on the ’80s setting because they wanted to show Diana coming into the modern world, and deemed that decade the “height” of our era (one she argued we’re living in the aftermath of). She stressed the production used as much practical wirework and effects as possible, although in Cheetah’s case, CGI will be enabling them to go “further” with the final stages of the character’s transformation than what prosthetics can allow. Gadot commented that the gold armor looked amazing, but was deeply uncomfortable to wear: she also stressed that this is the biggest film she’s ever worked on.
Wonder Woman 1984 will be released on June 5, 2020 in the US and UK (and the day before in Brazil). In the meantime, you can watch the full announcement panel here, and check out the official character posters below:
