It looks like as soon as she was about to get some more attention, Wonder Woman is put back onto the shelf.
Announced in October, it looked like David E Kelley was going to take Wonder Woman and put her on the TV as the latest in DCE’s attempts to get Wonder Woman into the mainstream media. Kelley is famous for work like Ally McBeal, so we all assumed that he could probably put out a decent show with the completely underused character. However, according to reports from Deadline, Fox and ABC both passed on the project while the CW simply couldn’t even afford it, with CBS and NBC both not offering viable homes either. The ABC situation makes sense, due to it being Disney owned and Disney also owning Marvel, and you might remember that ABC has shows in the works for Hulk, Cloak and Dagger, and Jessica Jones (and as a note, it made Brian Bendis quite happy to see Jessica Jones kick Diana’s ass). We should note, though, that ABC supposedly has a Fables show in the works, which is housed at DC’s Vertigo. Meanwhile, the people over at Fox passing on the project seems completely odd considering they were the host of Ally McBeal and another Kelley show, Boston Public, which probably shows a lack of faith in the show on their part.
This is pretty sad news for comic fans, honestly. In a world where comic book properties are becoming more mainstream (see: Avengers film franchies, Green Lantern film, Batman film franchise, plus the Walking Dead and the Cape), you’d think that a character like Wonder Woman – who used to dominated TV on ABC – would fit in. Yet she just can’t get a movie going, or a TV series. While we still have a lot of comic shows and movies still to look forward to, it might be time to pour one out for Diana. For an Amazonian Princess who is almost as strong as Superman, it looks like the one thing she can’t beat are entertainment executives (too soon?).
