Yes, you read that right. Despite all the varied comments about Wonder Woman in the fan community (see: David’s review of the last issue for example), DC Entertainment really wants us to love her. That’s why David E. Kelly, most famous for Ally McBeal, is going to give Diana a show of her own.
This could be interesting. Smallville is ending now, the previously mentioned Grayson show isn’t happening, and DC Entertainment only has one show on the air – Batman: Brave and the Bold. They’ve also been attempting to get Wonder Woman to a wider audience for a long time, even at one point attempting to work with Joss Whedon on a Wonder Woman movie. They’re now focusing on TV once again (because who can forget Lynda Carter’s performance as the character?), and Kelly could be a good choice. However, as Comics Alliance points out, ” The writer’s shows are characterized by exasperated, high functioning young women and narcissistic men frequently entangled in compromising workplace romances.”
As far as I can guess, if DC attempts to recreate the Smallville dynamic, it’ll ultimately fail, because the show is getting panned right now (see: Gil’s review) and Diana does not have even close to a similar origin. If DC focus on the Ambassader to Humanity aspect and perhaps works along the lines of the animated film, they could create a really nice dramedy-esque show.
Of course, how the fans will react is – as always – up in the air.
