This makes sense, actually. Fred Van Lente wrote the Captain America movie comic tie-in, and now his frequent collaborator Greg Pak is writing the story that will define the origin of the Red Skull.

We had previously guessed that maybe Pak was doing a book that would tie in with Marvel’s summer blockbuster series, and while we guessed it would be X-Related due to the previous tease that the book would be “like Magneto: Testament,” it looks like while we were right that it’s related to the film, we were wrong about the subject.

The book will seek to be the Marvel U’s definitive origin for the Red Skull, following Johann Schmidt as a young orphan in 1923 up through his nefarious actions in the 1940’s. Pak describes the book as similar to Magneto: Testament in that it is very respectful of the era that the story takes place in, with a lot of research having been done to make it authentic and appropriate. The story will operate not only as his origin, but also watching the rise of the Nazi Party in the Marvel Universe.

The book will feature Mirko Colak (Secret Warriors) on interiors, and David Aja on covers.

It helps that they have both the Captain America film and Fear Itself happening this summer, both featuring the Red Skull as a protagonist. I won’t be surprised to see this book do quite well.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
