We’d had notice of it back in February and admittedly forgot a bit, but cartoonist Yale Stewart now has four DC All-Ages books that you can buy.

Entitled “The Amazing Adventures of Superman!”, the four ‘chapter’ books (ie prose work with spot illustrations) are stand-alone little adventures of DC’s iconic characters for younger readers. Aimed for grades K through 2, they apparently run at about 32 pages and cast a wide net in terms of what they feature, ostensibly inspired by the 90s animated era (based on the visual imagery provided, which blends Yale’s generally Watterson-esque cartooning with a very Bruce Timm sense of iconography). The four are as follows:

  • “Alien Superman!”, which sees Superman turn into a ‘strange, green creature’ by Lex Luthor and clashing against Wonder Woman.
  • “Creatures from Planet X!,” a team-up with Green Lantern against some bug aliens.
  • “Escape from Future World!,” featuring Cyborg and Superman trapped inside a bottled future world by Braniac.
  • “Battle of the Super Heroes!”, which finds Clayface posing as Batman and starting a fued between him and Superman.

There’s no longer a $100 hardcover of it all as previously reported, but there is a $15 hardcover assumedly collecting all four books into one potentially on the way. Amazon lists it as out of stock, but with no cover art or any information to go off it’s tough to tell. We reached out to Yale to inquire and he didn’t have any further information, but he did note that while Amazon lists everything as paperbacks, his copies (pictured above) are hardcover library sized editions.

I also, for the record, love Yale’s bio on Amazon:

Yale Stewart is an independent comic book artist, working primarily on his creator-owned project, “Gifted,” and his JL8 webcomic featuring the DC Super Heroes. His day job is working in the vintage clothing industry. He attended Savannah College of Art and Design and graduated with a BFA in Animation. Originally from St. Louis, MO, he currently resides in Savannah, GA. He is also an avid movie-watcher and music-listener, and eagerly awaits the return of baseball season.

Don’t we all, Yale? Don’t we all.

Yale Stewart is most known to fans for his work with the webcomic JL8, featuring younger iterations of DC characters. Full of classic characterization and limitless optimism, if anyone is suited to write a series of kids books starring older iterations of the characters, Yale is certainly the guy to do it. I’ve not read his prose work before, but I’m personally confident in Yale’s storytelling ability as currently displayed in his webcomic to assume the best for these. If nothing else, it’ll be interesting to see Yale work with the adult iterations of the characters in a different setting, working their differences out in cityscapes instead of jungle gyms.

All four books are available now and run at $3.95 a pop, which seems like quite a steal to me. Buy them for yourself or some youngster that you’re quite fond of.

Matthew Meylikhov

Once upon a time, Matthew Meylikhov became the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Multiversity Comics, where he was known for his beard and fondness for cats. Then he became only one of those things. Now, if you listen really carefully at night, you may still hear from whispers on the wind a faint voice saying, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not as bad as everyone says it issss."
