The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Titan Comics will publish an adaptation of the animated Beatles movie Yellow Submarine. The comic, written and drawn by Bill Morrison, will be published next year to mark the film’s 50th anniversary.

Morrison was creative director of Bongo Comics from 1993 to 2012, and has also been appointed to take over as editor of MAD magazine next year. Last month, Morrison recently wrote the “Lobo/Road Runner Special” for DC Comics, as part of the DC/Looney Tunes crossover event.

Morrison has not yet commented, but The Hollywood Reporter quotes Titan publishing director Chris Teather as saying, “We’re thrilled to be publishing The Beatles: Yellow Submarine for the 50th Anniversary of this fantastic movie. We can’t wait for Beatles fans to experience this official adaptation.”

Yellow Submarine saw animated versions of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr teaming up to protect the music-loving underwater paradise of Pepperland from the music-hating Blue Meanies. The surreal film was packed with Beatles songs and included the real Paul, John, George and Ringo in a live-action denouement. Robert Zemeckis once pondered directing a motion capture remake, and the film has even been turned into a LEGO set. The comic follows a line of vinyl collectibles based on the film from Titan Merchandise, set for release later this month.
