Dark Horse Comics have announced “Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land,” a new four-part miniseries by Mike Mignola, Tom Sniegoski (Hellboy: The God Machine), Craig Rousseau (“Batman: Gotham Adventures”), and Dave Stewart. Matt Smith (“Folklords”) will be providing the series with its cover artwork.
Set in May 1947, the series will follow Hellboy and Professor Bruttenholm on route to a South American dig site, only to find themselves stranded on an island home to vampire queens, dinosaurs, and a giant ape god. Despite an as-yet-unrevealed personal hero of Hellboy rescuing them, danger remains. A new character, Scarlett Santiago, the Sky Devil, is the potential identity for the duo’s rescuer.
In a statement, Mignola described 1947 as “a wonderful period of [Hellboy’s] life to dig into, when he’s full of crazy energy; wired on a diet of comic books and monster movies; and just old enough to get into all sorts of trouble.” Sniegoski stated that the miniseries “wears its pulp sensibilities proudly,” and “will show readers that our monstrous hero was having amazing adventures way before even officially joining the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.).” Rousseau described the series as “non-stop weird fun,” with Hellboy and Bruttenholm’s relationship “[grounding] the story.”
“Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land” #1 is scheduled for release on February 17, 2021 with a Mignola variant cover. Rachele Aragno (“Mel The Chosen”), Wylie Beckert (Magic: The Gathering), and Anthony Carpenter (jazu) will be illustrating the variants for issues #2-4.
