Via CBR, writer Chip Zdarsky (“Sex Criminals”) and artist Jacob Phillips (“That Texas Blood”) have announced a new ongoing crime series called “Newburn.”
The series will chronicle the life of private detective Easton Newburn, as he investigates different conflicts between organized crime families in New York. The first issue will see Newburn charged with exploring the death of a man who was stealing from his mafia family, but whose “hit” had been sanctioned by someone else. The series will also feature a back-up story called ‘Brookyln Zirconia’ by writer Nadia Shammas and artist Ziyed Yusuf Ayoub, though details for it have been kept under wraps.
Each issue will feature a “done-in-one” story, according to Phillips, who also said Zdarsky is “at the top of his game crafting” them. Zdarsky implied these single stories will build across the series, stating that “crafting a massive story about a fictional New York underworld, was something I couldn’t wait to do,” in addition to being able to create the “the satisfaction that comes from crime procedurals” in “comic form.”
“Newburn” #1 will be released on November 3 with a primary cover by Phillips and a variant by Tula Lotay. You can check out Lotay’s variant and a host of preview pages over at CBR.
