So glad you guys are discussing Watchmen. I first read the whole thing through two years ago. Way back when the movie was about to come out — I was just starting high school — a friend lent me the book and I only got a few chapters in before I was too bored to continue. I was WAY too young to get it. I eventually bought it a few years later and it sat on the shelf until late 2015, when all the 2016 election stuff was kicking into high gear.

At that time and up to the election, worse imo than we’ve been experiencing since election season ended, there was this overwhelming feeling of dread and terror and everything was happening too fast and nobody had quite figured out how to keep up yet. “Claustrophobic,” as Brian said, was a great word to describe it. And Watchmen captured that feeling.

International tensions keep rising. On the home soil, everybody is discovering how to vehemently disagree and force their thought processes into unworkable corners. The Doomsday Clock is inching closer to midnight.

It’s so difficult to capture the “feeling” of living in a certain era, because it’s not something you can clearly describe. I’ve never read another book that so clearly captured a societal feeling, and it helped that Watchmen so clearly mirrored the way living in late 2015 felt. (Well, a few weeks later I saw the play Talk Radio, which did something eerily similar. Late 80s vibes.)

Aaaaaanywhoozle. Good stuff. Looking forward to next week’s discussion m/
